Shivers’ Army service led to Iraq, Afghanistan

Veteran of the Week

MADISON – Captain Tony Shivers’ service in the U.S. Army started in 1988 in Overland Park, Kan.

He was stationed in Georgia, North Carolina, Louisiana, three cities in Alabama, Maryland and Alaska, along with deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq.

He completed student infantry and airborne schools (BOLC II, IBOLC) in Fort Benning, Ga., Shivers was a Machine Gunner, C Co. 1/325 A.I.R. 82nd at Fort Bragg, N.C. and then Infantryman/Team Leader, B Co. 1/501st A.I.B, at Fort Richardson, Alaska.

At Fort Polk, La., he was Sniper Team Leader, Squad Leader Recon HHC 1/509th and Leader of Entry Team and Patrol and Sniper Teams.

With Alabama Army National Guard, he was SF Engineer, SGT DET 1, Co. B, 1/20 SFG (A) 1SF in Decatur. Shivers served as Intelligence Analyst, HHD 1/20 SFG (A) 1SF in Huntsville and as Psyop Officer, HHC 20th SFG (A) 1SF, in Birmingham.

For 450th Military Police Company, Shivers was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. and Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan.

He served as Commander of 200th Chemical Reconnaissance Detachment (CRD) 20th SFG (A). He was deployed to Camp Syverson, Iraq with Combined Joint Special Operations Forces – Arabian Peninsula (CJSOFA).

Retiring as Captain in 2015 after 27 years of service, he moved his family to Madison, where he has relatives.

Shivers earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the American Military University. He now works as an investigator for Huntsville Police Department.

His wife Jane works as a cosmetologist in Madison. Their daughter Josephine is a senior at Bob Jones High School.

Captain Shivers is a member of the 509th Association, 82nd Association, Disabled American Veterans and 20th Special Forces Association. He volunteers his free time at a local animal shelter.

His hobbies are fishing, hunting, sky diving and do-it-yourself projects around his home.
