MADISON – Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) members from Bob Jones High School won awards and qualified for national competition at the HOSA State Leadership Conference in Montgomery.

Approximately 1,800 HOSA students attended the conference, Melinda Lawson said. Lawson sponsors HOSA and chairs the Bob Jones Medical Academy.

Several Bob Jones students qualified to compete at the national HOSA convention in June:

* Ada Van Der Zijp — Medical Math, third place.

* Lou Ann Crosby — Biomedical Laboratory Sciences, first place.

* Kaitlyn Modaff — Epidemiology, third place.

* Kathryn White — Extemporaneous poster, first place.

* Arvind Draffen, Idress Miran, Dan Nguyen and Kevin Pierotte — Creative Problem-Solving, first place.

* Alex Winters, Sammy Shin, Aditya Mathur and Kate Newberry — Biomedical Debate, first place.

Mindy Foster was elected vice president of membership and competitive events. “To my knowledge, Mindy is the first student in our area to run for a state office,” Lawson said. “We took 20 students to the event and over one-half qualified to compete at the international conference in June.”

“All 20 of our students worked hard to prepare and made BJHS proud,” Lawson said.
