Bob Jones’ Smyth wins Nat Geo contest

MADISON – Ethan Smyth, a student at Bob Jones High School, has won a 21-day cultural excursion to Peru in the Nat Geo Mundo Explorer contest.

DIRECTV and Nat Geo Mundo announced Smyth’s win on April 4. The competition gives a unique travel program to students to go into the field with National Geographic photographers, scientists and writers.

The competition allows two U.S. and two Latin American students to embark on a National Geographic Student Expedition of their choice, all expenses paid.

At Bob Jones, Smyth enrolls in numerous advanced-placement courses and participates in National Honor Society. According to Smyth, he wants to use this experience to learn about distinct cultures and gain a unique perspective on the world that he can carry with him far beyond this trip.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer Ethan this exceptional opportunity. His passion for learning about different cultures, his commendable academic record and his positive community impact made him an excellent candidate,” Matt Grim with Fox Global Networks said.

In Peru, Smyth will join other students in photography sessions and exploration of the ancient past and vibrant contemporary culture of the region.

“DIRECTV and AT&T support programs that empower students and provide unique learning opportunities,” Dave Hargrove said. Hargrove is AT&T Regional Director of External Affairs.

“We’re thrilled to play a part in offering students like Ethan a chance to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime experience and look forward to learning about his adventures later this summer,” Hargrove said.

Ironically, Alabama is home to both Nat Geo Mundo Explorer winners. Claudia Reed of Southside was notified in March.
