Athlete of the Week

MADISON – Joey Daws is devoted to playing baseball. “I like it so much because my dad played it when he was little,” he said.

Daws said playing baseball helps him develop team sportsmanship. “Baseball has taught me no matter if I win or lose I keep my head up high, knowing I did my best,” he said.

During games, he plays anywhere that his team needs him, but his primary positions are first base and pitcher.

In addition, Daws plays football for St. John the Baptist Catholic School. “My positions in football are defensive end and right tackle. I am best at defense,” he said. He also races dirt bikes.

Daws is a sixth-grader at Horizon Elementary School. “I am captain of my class for Sports Spectacular, a competition between all Madison City elementary schools in a multitude of sports,” he said.

He participates with North Alabama Trail Riders Association (NATRA), a dirt bike club. In fifth grade, Daws served as an ambassador at Horizon.

Joey’s parents are Kyle and Lana Daws. He owns a landscaping business, and she is a nurse. Joey’s brother Evan is a first-grader.
