Youth orchestra offers summer camp

MADISON – Young musicians can keep their sight-reading skills alert, learn new music and have lots of fun at summer camp sessions with Madison City Youth Orchestra.
“Any boy or girl who plays a musical instrument can be a part of the summer session with Madison City Youth Orchestra,” director William Wortham said. “Make music, friends and memories.” William and wife Rebecca Wortham founded the orchestra in July 2013.
The camp, which started on May 16, will meet on Monday nights through June. Sessions will be held at Haven Baptist Church on 1840 Slaughter Road from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Fee for the entire session is $10. “Siblings, parents and grandparents are welcome to join,” Wortham said. “To participate in the camp, a camper must have completed ‘Book 1’ or equivalent.”
On June 27, the campers will present a concert in Madison.
“The playlist for the summer session was chosen by the students,” William said.
“Along with our regular patriotic-themed songs (all new this year), our summer repertoire includes ‘Uptown Funk,’ ‘Happy,’ ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ ‘Let There Be Peace on Earth,’ ‘The Chicken Dance,’ ‘Star Wars Medley,’ ‘Beatles Compilation,’ ‘Disney Classics,’ ‘Hallelujah,’ ‘What Does the Fox Say’ and ‘Mr. Sandman,'” he said.
“We’ll have great fun. Come join us,” Williams said.
From its founding, Madison City Youth Orchestra has grown from 11 to 100-plus students. The orchestra instrumentation has about 50 percent in the string section with the other half equally divided between woodwinds and brass.
A 501(c)3 organization, the orchestra welcomes area students from four to 21 years old, regardless of ability level or need. The youth have the opportunity to learn, rehearse and perform in a full-orchestra setting.
Conductors are skilled, engaging and energetic with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Students appreciate the opportunities they are given to peer-mentor and receive free or reduced rates for interning, he said.
