Groundbreaking set for new Catholic church

MADISON – A group of dedicated individuals has formed a new church, Most Merciful Jesus Catholic Church.

Organizers have scheduled a groundbreaking ceremony on Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. for a multi-purpose building on their Segers Road property.

“If inclement weather is pending, please check the Mercy Parish website for possible rescheduling. An inclement weather call will be made by 5 p.m. on Aug. 20,” Desiree’ Possel said. She serves as secretary of the Parish Coordination Committee.

Follow these driving instructions to reach the property: Driving west on Madison Boulevard, turn right (north) on County Line Road. Turn west (left) on Browns Ferry Road. Turn south (left) on Burgreen Road. Next, turn west (right) on Powell Road. Turn south (left) on Segers Road. Proceed on Segers Road to the sign for Mercy Parish.

Parishioners chose to build the multi-purpose building first for practical, budgetary reasons “The expense of building a parish church would present a debt far too large for a small, growing parish to undertake,” Possel said.

“We do have resources to build the initial phase. (Constructing the multi-purpose building) will enable the parish to begin its journey on its new property the soonest,” Possel said. “The building will accommodate Mass and parish life activities under one roof until the capital campaign program allows the parish to build its church.”

Father Joy Chalissery is serving as pastor.

Currently, Saturday Mass will be conducted at Mill Creek Elementary School, 847 Mill Road at 5:30 p.m. Also meeting at Mill Creek, Sunday masses will be held at 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

In addition, Mercy Parish has office hours at 11232 Dove Drive from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Led by Elizabeth Doty, volunteers from the administrative team will staff the office.

Parishioners at Mercy Parish have the opportunity to attend St. John’s Catholic School at the parishioner rate tuition. Verification forms for parishioner status go from the school to the pastor.
