MADISON- It seems bad weather is following Bob Jones football. Twice last year the Patriots played in rainstorms. They did it again Friday night to open the season and came away with a 35-14 win over Dorman High School (S.C).

Brad Anderson sent sportswriters scurrying for their record books when he bolted 99 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter then did it again as time ran out. For the game he finished with 310 yards on 17 carries and 3 touchdowns.

“I have a lot of confidence in Brad, he often gets overlooked because of his size but he’s a really good football player. You saw his elusiveness and straight ahead speed tonight. They couldn’t catch him,” Bob Jones coach Kevin Rose said.

Anderson led the team last season with three POTW honors and his performance has already got attention statewide.

With Dorman having traveled six hours on Thursday to get to Madison the rain brought another element to bear heavily on Rose.

“We had this planned for a year,” Rose added. “Obviously we had some weather issues but we did a good job of overcoming the wet field, our coordinators had great game plans and the kids executed. We have a good offensive line that I am confident in and we are going to run the football.

They got a great program and it gives out guys confidence knowing we beat a good football team and we can build on this.”

Bob Jones barely had 100 yards of total offense at halftime as they clung to a 14-8 lead. Dorman tied the game in the third quarter as quarterback Jalen Fowler scored from a yard out on fourth down.

Conditions made passing difficult but it was a throwback pass that gave Bob Jones the lead for good. Milkhi Stewart hit Sam Barnes on a 27 yard touchdown pass to break the tie.

Fans needed a roster to identify all the new faces on defense for Bob Jones. Jaquirrus Pelmer at corner, and linebackers D.J. Butler, Eli Johnston, and Isaiah Hatchett got extensive playing time. Jay Hawthorne, a first year starter at safety, picked off a Fowler pass and returned it 80 yards to set up Bob Jones’ second touchdown.

Rose singled out linebackers Kade Kohler and Trey Langford.

Twice the defense held Dorman inside the Bob Jones ten yard line in the fourth quarter.

“It was a team effort,” Rose said.

Elsewhere in Madison the game at Discovery Field between PJP II and West Morgan was postponed after coaches decided the field was unplayable due to standing water from the the heavy rain at gametime.
