Block party to ‘fix the gate’ for neighborhood

MADISON – Alex Riley, founder of MadisonUp, hopes to mend fences — literally and figuratively — with the “Fix the Gate Block Party.”
“MadisonUp invites you to take part in our inaugural block party on Sept. 24 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the vacant lot adjacent to Hunters Chase Apartments at 340 Gillespie Road. We’re trying to create a playground off Wall Triana for a community of underprivileged/under-served kids,” Riley said.
MadisonUp creates events for the youth and teenage demographic to keep them entertained and out of trouble. These events are targeted for low-income families who cannot afford admission or membership to Madison attractions, along with giving young entertainers a venue for their talents.
“Fix the Gate” is the catch slogan to grab people’s attention. “A fence actually does need repair … to bring attention to a real cause in a creative way to start conversation and keep it going,” Riley said. The inaugural block party also will involve trash pickup, pressure washing apartment buildings, planting gardens and further facilitating a playground.
For the block party, partnering entities can donate hot dogs, buns, sodas/water and paper plates and loan barbecue grills, electrical cords, generator for inflatables … even a Spanish translator.
Guests can park at All Nations and Center of Hope churches on Wall Triana.
“We’re looking for volunteers for Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to put flyers on doors of families in the apartment communities, informing them of the block party the following weekend,” Riley said.
To-date, 200-plus youth have participated with MadisonUp. “Thanks to all local sponsors from Madison and Huntsville,” Riley said. MadisonUp has sponsored the 20,000 Water Balloon Mayhem and booked talent for Madison’s July 4th festival and Huntsville’s Community Awareness for Youth (CAFY) event.
MadisonUp benefits youth “by doing good in their community, which gives them a deeper connection. They also benefit from fun-filled events. What won’t benefit from fun activity that works their legs, works off stress and creates smiles,” Riley said.
Currently, MadisonUp is looking for a boy or girl for their governing board. For more information, visit Facebook/MadisonUp.
