Council approves property purchase for library

MADISON – At its Sept. 12 meeting, Madison City Council approved payment of $865,106.77 to Judith D. Freudenberger for property at the site of the new facility for Madison Public Library.
Littlejohn received $53,995.34 for construction engineering and inspections for Phase II of the County Line Road project. For work on Garner Street extension, Eagle Utilities and Vault was paid $8,222.60, J.W. Kennedy & Associates was paid $4,945 and Omi Inc. received $300.
Council accepted a one-time appropriation of $10,000 from Dale Strong, Chairman of Madison County Commission, for the city’s tennis court project.
In other business, council approved continuation of employee life insurance benefits with Hartford. Council also heard discussion for changes to the job classification plan and approved a job description for deputy court clerk.
Madison Fire Department received authorization to purchase a ladder truck from HGAC Purchasing Cooperative with funding from 2016-2017 Capital Replacement Budget.
Council approved public hearings for the following proposed ordinances:
* Rezoning property owned by Old Town Investments LLC from AG, Agriculture District to TND, Traditional Neighborhood Development District. The property is located west of Zierdt Road and south of Madison Boulevard.
* Rezoning property located north of Madison Boulevard and east of Celtic Drive owned by Ghanshyam Patel from Restricted Industrial District to General Business District.
* Zoning property owned by Papa Jacks Inc., located at the southeast corner of Balch and Gillespie roads, to B2, Community Business District.
For the municipal runoff election on Oct. 4, residents who cannot visit the polls can submit an absentee ballot application no later than Sept. 29 by 5 p.m. with the Madison City Clerk-Treasurer.
Individuals can deliver applications in person and show identification to the clerk-treasurer. Or, individuals can mail the application to City Clerk-Treasurer, 100 Hughes Road, Madison, AL 35758 (per Alabama State Law, one application per envelope).
