HUNTSVILLE – After nearly 900 yards of combined offense, it came down to 23.
That’s how far junior Sean Dorney kicked his first high school football field goal Friday night, lifting No. 5 Madison Academy to a 39-36 win over Class 4A, Region 7 foe and host Randolph.
The Mustangs overcame two first-half turnovers, including a fumble at the Raiders’ 1-yard line, to improve to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the region. Randolph fell to 3-1, 1-1.
“It was a very competitive game against a well-coached team,” Madison Academy coach Grant Reynolds said. “Randolph had a great squad.”
Dorney’s kick came with 1:28 left to play in the game.
“We made some mistakes early that allowed them to be competitive,” Reynolds said.
The Mustangs trailed 15-8 at halftime, then switched to a ground oriented attack in the second half and tied the game 29-all entering the fourth quarter.
Keke Matthews led the second half comeback. He carried the ball 23 times and rushed for 121 of his 166 yards in the final two quarters.
Madison Academy quarterback Grayson Edgemon completed 16-of-29 passes for 194 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Jaelin Ferdinand caught six passes for 89 yards and a touchdown.
The Mustangs visit Region 7 opponent Westminster on Friday. The Wildcats (1-3, 1-1) are coming off a 28-18 win over DAR.
“We still have a chance to win our region and continue our state championship aspirations,” Reynolds said.
