McDonald sparks Clemens win

By MIKE EASTERLING / For the Record

PINSON — Kyriq McDonald wasted little time showing off for the handful of college recruiters in the audience of the James Clemens’ game Friday.

McDonald, one of numerous football prospects on the James Clemens High School football roster, returned the opening kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown to set off a 28-6 road victory over Clay-Chalkville.

He also scored on a 30-yard interception return and a 50-yard run on his first carry of the night in the fourth quarter. On defense, the safety had two tackles for loss.

McDonald has committed to Alabama, which had coaches on hand for the versatile display. Georgia also had coaches at the game.

James Clemens, ranked No. 9 in Class 7A, improved to 3-2 with its third straight win. The Cougars, ranked No. 6 in 6A, fell to 4-2.

James Clemens led 14-3 at the end of the first quarter and 14-6 at halftime and entering the fourth quarter.

Austin McGhee had a 15-yard rushing touchdown for the Jets in the fourth quarter, following McDonald’s 50-yard burst to start the period.

Clay-Chalkville, playing without injured starter running back Quintin Young, got field goals of 28 and 30 yards from Drennen Mayhew.

In a defensive battle, James Clemens had just 178 yards in total offense. The Jets passed four times, completing two for 11 yards with one interception.

James Clemens goes back to Region 4 play Friday night when it hosts Grissom at Madison City Schools Stadium.
