HUNTSVILLE – Two of the year’s major events at Downtown Huntsville Library are approaching. The third annual Rocket City NerdCon is scheduled for Oct. 22-23, and the Teen Masquerade Ball: Humans vs. Zombies will be held Oct. 29.
“Do you geek out over ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Doctor Who’ or anything ‘Harry Potter’? What about collectibles, comic books, steampunk or Disney? Celebrate these ‘fandoms’ and more at the bigger, better and nerdier Rocket City NerdCon,” director of public relations Laura McPhail said.
NerdCon will feature games, vendors and costume-clad revelers. This year’s event also includes an Author and Artist Alley, RPG gaming, bad movie awards and much more.
Sponsors are enVention and Old Black Bear Brewing Company.
Yellowhammer Brewery will host a kick-off party on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. “Then on Oct. 22, we’re going from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.,” NerdCon chairperson Julia Hendon said.
On Oct. 23, NerdCon will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. NerdCon special guests are Jim and A. Ron from the popular “Bald Move” TV; filmmaker and graphic novelist Daniel Boyd; and Atlanta-based actor Chris Harrelson,” Hendon said.

The next event, the eighth annual Zombies v. Humans Teen Masquerade Ball on Oct. 29 will run from 8 p.m. to midnight. The masquerade will start with a game of “Zombies vs. Humans.” “Bring your own Nerf gun for maximum fun,” McPhail said.
A Zombie Prom will follow with cosplay contests, lip-sync battles, zombie makeup-effect artists, prizes and refreshments. “The library is happy to provide a safe, age-appropriate event for teens and ‘tweens’ to celebrate Halloween,” Mandy Pinyan said. Pinyan works as youth services coordinator and outreach manager.
Huntsville Library Foundation and Whole Foods are sponsors.
