MADISON- In a season of super performances, Bob Jones senior quarterback Brady Polson saved one of his best for senior night. Behind Polson’s two passing touchdowns and one running touchdown, Bob Jones rolled over Buckhorn 43-26 on Oct. 21 and secured a playoff spot.
Polson has a school record 27 consecutive starts at quarterback and for the second straight year went over 2,000 yards passing.
Buckhorn took advantage of Bob Jones miscues to build a 20-0 lead in the first quarter.
Polson began the comeback with a 59-yard scoring strike to Demontrez Brown and then found Milkyle Stewart with a 5 yard touchdown pass as time ran out in the first half with Bob Jones on top 21-20.
In the third quarter Brad Anderson added an eight yard touchdown run and Polson ran one in himself from six yards out to make it 35-26 Bob Jones.
The defense took over and twice held Buckhorn on downs. D.J. Butler deflected a pass and had a tackle for loss. He also had one sack.
Bob Jones offense added a late touchdown on a 7-yard run by Brad Anderson.
Polson’s passing numbers were 20-30 for 316 yards. Demontrez Brown had 7 catches for 163 yards and Milkyle Stewart had 4 catches for 60 yards.
Brad Anderson got the Patriots running game going with 142 yards on 19 carries.
Gavin Lewis sacked Buckhorn quarterback Jackson Holliday on the games last series.
“Our seniors and the entire football team showed a lot of grit,” Bob Jones head coach Kevin Rose said. “I don’t think I’ve ever been down 20-0 and come back to win. They stole 2 possessions in the first quarter. We ran the football and helped our defense and our defense helped the offense. From the second quarter on we played really good football. That’s a good football team we beat.”
Bob Jones defense was much maligned the last two games giving up over 100 points combined but held Buckhorn to only six points the final three quarters.
“Our defense played really well all night long. They answered the challenge,” Rose said.
Bob Jones now will enjoy their open week before starting the playoffs.
“We wanted a week to prepare and get healthy. We will use this week to prepare to go win a playoff game,” Rose said.
There is now a three way tie for second place through fourth place in Class 7A, Region 4. Hewitt Trussville won the region.
