MONTGOMERY – Alabama Association of School Boards (AASB) has named Dr. Terri Johnson to the 2016 All-State School Board. Johnson serves as president of Madison Board of Education.
The association began its recognition program for All-State School Board members in 1992 to recognize up to five of Alabama’s most outstanding members.
“I am very honored to be named to the All-State School Board. I am surrounded by a great team of people who all agree to put students first,” Johnson said.
Other honorees are Joe Boteler, Tuscaloosa County; Mary Hooks, Macon County; Mike Turner, Talladega County; and April Williams, Birmingham City.
Johnson is also known as “Saint Terri” by certain staff members, according to an AASB release. She has served on Madison Board of Education since 2007. Individuals who nominated Johnson describe her as “diligent, invaluable and a pleasure to work with.”
Johnson is credited with helping the Madison school board advance from a startup district to one of the largest and highest performing districts in the state.
Her mathematical background aided in substantiating a second high school in Madison, along with renovation of Bob Jones High School. “Her skills as a mathematician were invaluable in areas such as rezoning, finance and capital planning,” Ray White said. White formerly served president of Madison Board of Education.
Staying informed on municipal issues, Johnson has attended almost all meetings of Madison City Council.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. and master’s and doctorate’s degrees in applied mathematics at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Johnson works as a full-time lecturer in UAH Department of Mathematical Sciences.
Her husband Greg works as a software engineer for Northrop Grumman Corporation. Their sons Russel, Charlie and Mark are accomplished swimmers and have studied at Bob Jones.
“When I think of the perfect school board member, I think about Dr. Johnson,” Dr. Dee Fowler said. Fowler is Deputy State Superintendent/Chief of Staff. “She embodies all the characteristics desired — love, high expectations, knowledge, patience and a willingness to serve.”
Johnson and her fellow inductees will be honored at the ASSB annual convention on Dec. 8-10 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Birmingham.
