MADISON – Madison City Chess League has scheduled three tournaments during January to prepare for the Alabama State Scholastic Chess Championship on March 11-12 at Bob Jones High School.
“The more tournaments your child can participate in, the better prepared they will be for state,” league executive director Ranae Bartlett said. “These tournaments each offer something different for competitive chess players.”
To register, visit madisonchess.com and click the tournaments box; on the new page, click the title for the tournament for registration details.
“Be sure to update your U.S. Chess Federation memberships before you register for the tournament,” Bartlett said.
The Winter Blitz Tournament on Jan. 8 involved six rounds in double Swiss format. This contest affected blitz rating only. Rainbow Elementary School hosted this event.
Winter Knights Tournament on Jan. 14 will offer both rated and non-rated sections. Fee is $20.
The rated sections will have four rounds with 60 minutes and five-second delay. Non-rated sections will include five rounds with 30 minutes and five-second delay.
Only rated sections require USCF membership. Columbia Elementary School at 667 Balch Road will host the tourney. Round times for rated sections will be 9 a.m., noon, 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.; time control will be G/60;d5. Non-rated sections will hold rounds at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.; time control will be G/30;d5.
Contestants will vie for individual medals in both sections.
“Each rated section of Winter Knights is a qualifier for the 2017 Madison City Scholastic Chess Championship. The top two players from each grade bracket will be invited to participate in the city championship,” Bartlett said.
The Rookie Rally Tournament on Jan. 28 will be held at Blossomwood Elementary School at 1321 Woodmont in Huntsville. A mandatory meeting for players will be held at 9:15 a.m. Fee is $20.
USCF membership is required. Section will include Open (K-12), Junior High (K-9), Elementary (K-6), Elementary (4-6) U500 and Primary (K-3). Round times will be 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 12:45 p.m., 2:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Time control will be G/30, d5.
“Both individual and team awards will be given for the same sections that were held during Queen’s Quest,” Bartlett said. “This is the last qualifier for Madison City Chess Championship for Madison residents.”
