Students, adults face off for MCCL Challenge

MADISON – Business and civic leaders will face formidable opponents at the third annual Madison City Chess League Challenge.
The event is scheduled for Jan. 25 at 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Central Office of Madison City Schools at 211 Celtic Drive.
“We’re looking for adults to play some great kids in a friendly game of chess,” MCCL Executive Director Ranae Bartlett said. “Mayor Paul Finley and City Council President Tommy Overcash have confirmed their attendance.”
Adults who are willing to take on the challenge can email Bartlett at mccl.director@gmail.com.
Members of Madison City Chess League who are 10 years old and younger will challenge any local leader or business person to a chess match. The league will provide all of the equipment.
From 5:30 to 6 p.m., a “blindfold challenge” will be held by MCCL student Michael Guthrie against David Kumbroch of WHNT-News 19.
In addition, more experienced students in the chess league will present game demonstrations.
“The public is invited to come watch and participate in the chess match,” Bartlett said. “We hope you will consider donating to MCCL, a 501(c)3 charitable organization that promotes chess education in North Alabama.”
MCCL’s 2017 goal is to raise funds to bring a chess master to North Alabama to train youth during summer camp. Donation recognition levels are Grandmaster for a donation of $3,000 or larger; International Master, $1,000 to $2,999; FIDE Master, $500 to $999; and Master, $100 to $499.
League members should register to participate. “Priority will be given to kids whose families are lifetime members or who have renewed their annual membership for 2017,” Bartlett said. Parents will be notified by email in January if their child has been selected to participate.
“Even if you cannot participate, consider making a donation to Madison City Chess League,” Bartlett said. Individuals can donate online or mail a check to Madison City Chess League, P.O. Box 843, Madison, AL 35758.
