MADISON – In observance of Catholic Schools Week, students at St. John the Baptist Catholic School remembered their teachers, clergy and city employees with moments of respect and delicious treats.

“St. John the Baptist Catholic School celebrates Catholic education along with all of our nation’s Catholic schools each year during the last week of January,” Principal Sherry Lewis said. “Students began the week by serving as gift bearers during the Catholic masses over the weekend.”

On Jan. 30, St. John honored individuals who serve as municipal employees. “Students delivered goodies to City Hall, Madison Fire & Rescue Department, Madison Police Department and others who are vital to the success of the city of Madison,” Lewis said.

Also at City Hall, the students delivered desserts to members of Madison City Council. Council members promised to schedule students to deliver the Pledge of Allegiance at a council meeting in coming weeks.

Students got a break from their daily routine on Jan. 31 with fun activities at school, along with no homework and no uniform requirement. “We honored the Priests and Deacons within the parish of St. John’s and the newly formed Catholic Church, Most Merciful Jesus” on Feb 1, Lewis said.

St. John PTO will treat the faculty and staff with a tasty luncheon on Feb. 2. “During the Friday morning carline, parents will be honored by handouts of breakfast treats packed in bags decorated by students,” Lewis said.

“Celebrations are ongoing all year, and the community is invited and welcomed to come and see what Catholic education has to offer,” Lewis said.

Catholic Schools Week runs from Jan. 29 through Feb. 4 this year. Catholic schools across the United States will observe the special week with service outreach in projects that benefit their hometowns.

Established in 1974, Catholic Schools Week recognizes the continual contributions of Catholic education in this country. The 2017 theme is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” (catholicstand.com)

This school year marks the 20th anniversary of St. John’s School.

St. John’s address is 1057 Hughes Road. For more information, call 256-722-0772 or visit stjohnb.com or Facebook/St. John the Baptist Catholic School.
