Patriot Color Guard plans interest clinic, camp

MADISON – Patriot Color Guard at Bob Jones High School is giving a boost to aspiring and current guard members with an ‘interest clinic’ and summer camp.

The Color Guard Pre-Audition Interest Clinic will be held on April 15 from 1 to 5 p.m. on the Bob Jones campus at 650 Hughes Road. This session will introduce the student to the demands and rewards of joining color guard before they actually decide to audition.

The clinic will cover some of the basics that a color guard member must perform in a typical routine and “give an idea of what color guard is like,” guard director Brooke Howe said.

The interest clinic is open to all rising seventh- through twelfth-graders in North Alabama “who may be curious about color guard and want to try it out before auditioning at their respective schools,” Howe said.

Clinic fee is $15. Organizers will provide flags.

Pre-registration is necessary to determine the number of flags that are needed. To pre-register, complete the form at https://goo.gl/forms/DNAiWIWKqwQnL71y2.

In another helpful project, “Bob Jones Color Guard is pleased to announce the third annual Patriot Color Guard Summer Camp,” Howe said. This four-day camp for band auxiliaries will run from June 12-15 from 4 to 6 p.m. on Bob Jones’ campus.

No experience with flags is necessary. Bob Jones will provide equipment. “Campers will receive a free T-shirt. Quality instruction and fun will be provided,” Howe said.

The camp is open to rising fourth- through ninth-graders. Camp fee is $75.

“This year, we will have two groups — one for students with previous color guard experience (taken our camp before, or been in color guard at school), and a separate group for complete beginners,” Howe said.

Campers will present a performance for parents at 5:30 p.m. on the camp’s last day, June 15. Online registration will be available soon. For more information, visit Facebook/Patriot Color Guard Summer Camp.

Brooke Howe serves as Bob Jones Color Guard Director. Currently, she works as an aerospace engineer in Huntsville. A graduate of the University of Alabama, she was a member of the Million Dollar Band Color Guard and a founding member of the Alta Marea Winter Guard, a finalist at Winter Guard International World Championship.
