Bob Jones claims first place nationally in geometry

MADISON – It’s official. Math students at Bob Jones High School ranked in first place in the nation in geometry testing with the Mathfax competition, hosted by Educontest.

MathFax.com is collection of questions and answers about mathematics in categories organized by topics. In addition, students can interact with a trained, professional expert and ask questions to receive instant help.

The Mathfax national competition is an annual contest with a series of four tests. The contest identifies students who are able to think critically and solve complex problems within a 30-minute time constraint.

Kimberly Cox teaches math at Bob Jones and sponsors the math teams.

Bob Jones Advanced Math Team came in third place, ranking just behind West Babylon High School in New York and Chamblee Charter High School in Georgia. Bob Jones students grabbed the number one honor in individual slots in both divisions.

Joey Li placed first in the nation in Advanced Math with a perfect score on all four rounds. Also placing in the top 30 were Aditi Limaye, 17th place; David Li, 18th; Shantanu Kadam, 26th; Winston Van, 28th; and Tony Tian, 30th .

In the geometry division, Lynne Clark from Bob Jones placed first in the nation. Other place winners were Sherry Lee, ninth, and David Teng, 18th. Hugh Mitchell placed in the top 75 slots in the United States.

In the geometry competition, the state of Alabama captured the top two places. Bob Jones ranked in first place. From 100 possible points, Bob Jones scored 65, 74, 70 and 72 on the four tests for a total of 281. Spain Park High School in Hoover scored, 62, 69, 69 and 71 for a grand total of 271.

Bob Jones Principal Sylvia Lambert congratulated the outstanding accomplishments of these math students. “We are so proud of these students and so appreciate Kimberly Cox’s leadership with this group. She has continued to guide, coach and mentor these outstanding young people,” Lambert said.
