Benson signs scholarships with Springhill College

MADISON – Angel Benson, a 2017 graduate of James Clemens High School, has signed an academic and basketball scholarship with Springhill College.

Founded in 1830, Springhill is the oldest Catholic college in the South. “Angel was a four-year letter recipient in basketball and volleyball,” Rocky Smith said. Smith is Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at James Clemens.

Benson played basketball and volleyball for the Jets and travel basketball for the Alabama Avatars. In volleyball, she also played for NASA and Rocket City Volleyball Club in Huntsville.

“For basketball, I am a point guard and a shooting guard. For volleyball, I am middle blocker and a right side hitter,” Benson said.

Basketball is Benson’s favorite sport. “I feel this is what I do best. I receive more self-satisfaction when I excel in it. I also enjoy playing with the girls on my team,” she said.

At James Clemens, Benson served as vice president of Beta Club and participated in Spanish Club and National Society of High School Scholars. Away from school, she is a member of Today’s Youth Tomorrow’s Leaders, a club promoting awareness for prescription drug use for teens.

Her parents are Tony and Dee Benson. Tony works as a computer scientist, and Dee works for the Army Corps of Engineers. “I moved in 2013 from Tennessee. My family and I moved to Madison due to the great education system and the environment,” Angel said.
