Plan your costume for library’s NerdCon

HUNTSVILLE – As the popular “Game of Thrones” saying goes, “Winter is coming.” However, around Huntsville-Madison County Public Library, the saying is, “NerdCon is coming.”

The fourth annual Rocket City NerdCon will be held Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Downtown Huntsville Library, 915 Monroe St.

“For those who are new to the convention, Rocket City NerdCon is a celebration of all things ‘nerdy.; If your fanaticism for pop culture, comic books, movies, TV shows, books, games, collectibles, crafting or cosplay borders on obsessively nerdy, then this is the convention for you,” Public Relations Director Laura McPhail said.

Rocket City NerdCon is an opportunity to meet other people “who geek out over similar subjects, and let your inner nerd flag fly,” McPhail said.

Our motto for Rocket City NerdCon is ‘no nerd left behind,’” NerdCon chairperson Dorothie Linton said. “We’re one of the most affordable conventions you’ll find, and if you are a fan of something, chances are we have a panel, discussion, presentation or workshop for you.”

Rocket City NerdCon special guests will include Jim and A. Ron of Bald Move with intelligent and humorous pop culture commentary. Atlanta-based actor Chris Harrelson, best known for his work as 27 different ‘walkers’ on “The Walking Dead,” also returns to share his stories and experiences on more than 30 movies and TV shows.

“Professional cosplayer, curvy model, published author and artist, and all-around geek girl Sharon Rose joins us this year,” McPhail said. “Known for her EVA foam armor crafting, props and paint detail work, she has been featured on numerous geek culture media sites, including marvel.com.”

In addition, Kati Coe is a cosplayer, toy vendor and has a general love of all things nerdy, McPhail said. She has been featured on numerous media sites, including NerdCaliber and marvel.com and has appeared on the AMC series “Comic Book Men.”

For 2017, day passes will not be available. Instead, tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door and are good for the entire weekend of fandom fun.

Ten-year-olds and younger receive free admission with ticketed adults. The library will be open to the public during normal library hours, but only ticket holders will have access to the library past normal hours and be admitted to panel rooms, workshops and select kids’ events.

“Another big opportunity this year is for adults to let their little ones enjoy Kids Camp during Saturday’s Rocket City NerdCon. Adults can enjoy the convention knowing their kids are in a safe place enjoying Harry Potter-themed activities,” McPhail said.

Kids Camp for ages 5-12 runs from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and ages 8-18 from 4 to 6 p.m. Kids Camp is only on Nov. 4 with a $5 supply fee. All children must be pre-registered when tickets are purchased. Space is limited to 40 children in each Kids Camp session.
