Brett Potter excels at world games

MADISON – Brett Potter, a sixth-grader at Mill Creek Elementary School, dominated his age group in competition at a set of world games.

Brett won 11 medals — three gold, two silver and six bronze — in badminton, shotput, basketball, swimming and even kurling in the World Dwarf Games in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. He competed against hundreds of athletes with dwarfism from 22 countries around the world.

Participants also engaged in special events to celebrate international understanding, promote awareness of the dwarf experience worldwide and provide on-site clinics for athletes. World Dwarf Games provide families with a supportive environment and opportunities for forging lifelong friendships. (worlddwarfgames2017.org)

Deciding to enter, Brett wanted “to go to a new place and meet new friends and to play games with new friends that are just like me. I wanted to play sports that I don’t get to do all the time.”

However, Brett had to do his ‘homework.’ “I had to practice so I could do good. My dad taught me how to play the sports I didn’t know,” he said.

Winning all the awards felt good to Brett. He plans to continue pursuing all the sports. “I especially started liking badminton, which is a Paralympic sport for Little People,” he said.

Brett’s parents are Eric and Annette Potter. Eric works as a senior engineer at a major aerospace company. Annette is a nurse practitioner with HEALS or Health Establishments at Local Schools that assists in-need children. Brett’s nine-year-old sister Hannah is a fourth-grader at Mill Creek.

A: The burrito at Moe’s.

Q: What are your favorite sports teams?

A: Kansas City Royals.

Q: What’s your favorite sports memory?

A: Brett fondly remembers “watching the Royals games with my dad, especially when they won the World Series. Baseball is my favorite sport.”

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

A: “Practice baseball and other sports, play on my iPad, gardening and play with my friends,” Brett said.
