Thousands to pack Monte Sano for Dog Fair

MONTE SANO – Monte Sano State Park will attract thousands of humans and their dogs for the 15th annual Dog Fair. Huntsville Obedience Training Club hosts the event.

The fair on Sept. 30 will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with those hours packed with fun events. The Dog Fair is free, but visitors must be the state park’s $10 parking fee.

“Dog Fair is attended by thousands of people each year. Many bring their dogs, while others adopt dogs from the local rescue groups and humane society,” obedience club spokesperson Denise Edge said.

More than 160 people volunteer for the dog fair. “We will have a microchipping clinic. In six rings of activities, people can participate with their dog in tests of agility, rally, manners for AKC Canine Good Citizen, nose work and other activities,” Edge said.

Music on the Mountain at 10 a.m. will showcase numerous freestyle performances. Dogs will dance in outstanding routines.

At 11 a.m., the Dog Show for Kids will be the fair’s version of Westminster Dog Show. “It’s not only fun, but you’ll get a prestigious ribbon, a cool toy and have the opportunity to take a winner’s circle picture of you and your dog,” Edge said.

At 11:30 a.m., the Obedience, & Escapades Ring will have dogs demonstrating how to heel, jump, retrieve and recall with joy and precision, Edge said. The Obedience Demonstration will showcase obedience club dog/handler teams in beginner to advanced exercises.

The Freestylers will conduct a Training Circus at noon. “You’ll see beginner dogs and handlers, along with advanced teams doing short demonstrations of skills developed for freestyle dance routines,” Edge said.

At 10 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m., owners can let their dogs take center stage for K9 Escapades. The most attractive dogs will strut in the ring for “Prettiest” and “Handsomest.” Judges will consider originality, execution and level of difficulty for “Best Trick.”

In addition, owners can let their imaginations run wild in dressing their dog for “Best Costume.” Infinite possibilities are open for “My Dog Looks Like _____”; dogs can use accessories and props to heighten the similarities.

Dog Fair visitors will be eligible for prizes. Vendors will display merchandise. For more information, visit dogfair.org Facebook/HOTC Dog Fair.
