Butler enters state senate race

MADISON – Former State Senator Tom Butler has announced his candidacy for Alabama State Senate, District 2 in the June Republican Primary.

Currently, Sen. Bill Holtzclaw represents this district, but he is vacating that position to run for U.S. Congress, 5th District.

Butler built a strong reputation as “a working leader” when he served in the Alabama Legislature from 1982 through 1994 and in the State Senate from 1994 through 2010, according to Butler’s press release.

“Butler was instrumental in District 2’s growth by securing funding for roads, new schools and bringing thousands of new jobs. Tom was recognized as one of the most outstanding legislators in Alabama for providing leadership for regional economic development to recruit Navistar, Boeing, Menasha, Toyota and Steelcase,” the release stated.

“Being a public servant is my calling. I am ready to go back to work for District 2 in the Alabama State Senate. We will work tirelessly to improve this district and the State of Alabama,” Butler said.

While in the State Senate, Tom Butler created, sponsored and passed legislation for $175 million in state bond money for BRAC-impacted schools in North Alabama. He served as Senate sponsor to bring more TVA funds to North Alabama. Butler secured state funding for the National Space Sciences & Technology Center and the Applied Sciences Center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Butler is a registered pharmacist and a graduate of both Auburn University and the University of Alabama. He and his wife Karen are members of the University Baptist Church, where he has served as a church medical missionary to South America.

Tom Butler participates with Gideon’s International and Alabama Republican Executive Committee. Locally, he served on the Madison Governance Committee 2025 that analyzed and recommended configurations for Madison’s municipal government structure.
