After-School Golf Is Also Mentoring Program

Madison- The Par Excellence Youth Development (PEYD), a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization is set to hold its annual After-School Golf and Mentoring Program. The golf instruction program is held each Tuesday and Thursday at the Madison Golf Center from 5:00-6:30 p.m. The program is free for youngsters ages 7-18.

“In today’s most popular sports I don’t see a lot of character from the participants, but one thing I love about the professional golf industry is demands every aspect of the game to show respect for each other and the game,” said Howard Bankhead, executive director of the PEYD in Huntsville/Madison. “We strive to honor the great sport of golf through our program.”

The After-School and Mentoring Program is funded by several local businesses and provides expert coaching of golf and the sport’s teaching of respect for your fellow competitor. Research has shown children in quality afterschool programs are more likely to come to school and stay in school, complete their required school work and make better grades. The golf program at the Madison Golf Center can enhance the hours between the time school closes and parents return from work with an engaging experience of exercise and mentoring.

Over the last 15 years the PEYD golf program, which is a continuation of the former “First Tee” golf event, has provided thousands of youth academic and life skills development. Experts in the sport will provide the basics of golf instructions in every aspect of the game. The basics of club grip, golf swing, rules and sportsmanship will be included. For Bankhead, the idea of providing such great lessons in golf and life for free is something that makes the PEYD far apart from other programs.

“This is about character improvement, being able to strengthen academics and development of life and golf skills,” said Bankhead.
