Semester moving fast for women’s job corps

MADISON – The fall semester is clicking along for students with Christian Women’s Job Corps of Madison County Inc.

The corps’ job readiness classes offer an array of experiences and skills that will allow graduates to compete in the job market and create a better life for themselves and their families. “We teach basic computer skills, job search skills, money management, communications and, most importantly, Bible study,” site coordinator Susan D. Elder said.

Student interviews opened on Aug. 21, followed by orientation about one week later. The Madison site is located at Heritage United Methodist Church.

Rev. Suzanne Katschke with Heritage UMC opened the orientation. “Madison Christian Church provided an over-the-top delicious lunch, showering our ladies with His love the very first day,” Elder said. Lydia Circle of United Methodist Women at Asbury UMC presented gift bags and balloons to all students.

“Approximately 25 people, including students, board members, volunteers and other invited guests attended the luncheon,” Elder said. Following a corps tradition, the students released balloons outside to close the event.

Students have received other donations from Chick-fil-A, Asbury UMC Sewing Circle, First Bible Church and Carolyn Brelsford.

As part of their studies, students enter internships that local businesses and groups offer. Currently, internships are active with The Catalyst with Women’s Business Center of North Alabama, Asbury UMC, State Farm, attorney Rochelle A. Conley, First Priority of North Alabama, Free 2 Teach and KTECH with Kids to Love.

Curriculum instructors this semester are Jean Brown, career coaching; Lori Cline, Bible study; Don Groves, life planning; Ellie Hilton, computer studies; Sharon McEwen, Alicia Shelley and Lea Williams, computer aide; and Linda Wooten, money management.

The job corps’ students have met with several guest speakers, including Shannon McCaig, Angie Burrows, Carmen Everson and Rev. Suzanne Katschke. Special events have included couponing, professional makeup, Clothes Closet fittings, inspiration and mock interviews.

The Madison site of Christian Women’s Job Corps is located inside Heritage UMC, 29768 Huntsville Brownsferry Road. Office hours for the corps are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
