Triana readies for grilling, games at Arbor Day Celebration

MADISON – Community members will gather for a day of camaraderie and delicious home-cooked food when the Town of Triana hosts its annual Arbor Day Celebration on Oct. 14 in Flamingo Park.

Barbecue masters and weekend grillers alike will start cooking at 8 a.m. for a barbecue contest. The hickory and mesquite smoke will filter through the air until 1 p.m. when the grillers must turn in various meats for judging.

Cooks and grillers can enter several categories: ribs; pork, sauced and dry rub; beef; chicken, sauced and dry; and turkey. Cooks also can compete for the best chili. Entry fee is $20.

New for 2017, a People’s Choice category will be included in the barbecue contest. Arbor Day guests can buy ballot for $2. Contestants who want to participate in People’s Choice voting can offer samples to guests with a ballot. Guests will vote for their favorite style of barbecue, and the winner will take all ballot fees.

Contestants must set up grills only in designated areas. Competitors are responsible for all their supplies including grills. All winners will be announced at 3 p.m.

In addition, the Arbor Day Celebration will include a baking contest. Cooks can enter their best recipes for pies, pudding and cakes. Baked goods will be judged at 10 a.m. Entry fee is $10.

Cooks who enter the barbecue and baking contests will vie for cash prized up to $100.

Individuals who have entered the essay contest must submit their compositions by 10 a.m.

Carnival games will entertain all age groups. ‘Bouncy Houses’ will let youngsters enjoy some fun while exercising. The ever-popular Bingo contest will awards prizes to winning cards.

In addition, vendors will have booths with arts and crafts merchandise. At the dunk tank, residents can attempt to hit the target and cause a volunteer to splash into the water.

Cooks must complete a registration form. To access the form, visit https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5GSz8RfJtrhMzYzZUI3RXJ2ZVU/viewc.
