Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Games Oct. 28
HUNTSVILLE- The Metro Kiwanis Sports Plex in Huntsville will host a special day of softball action featuring the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team on Saturday, Oct. 28 with the special team playing a doubleheader against Team Redstone in game one and The Protectors in a second game. The games include free admission.
“The event is being put on by the AUSA Young Professionals based here in Huntsville. We are bringing the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team to Huntsville for the second year in a row,” said Elizabeth Fontanez, AUSA President. “The team members are all veterans who have lost a limb, yet still play an incredible game of softball despite their limitations. These individuals are passionate about helping others who have similar limitations. One of the ways they exercise that passion is by hosting yearly summer camps for children who live life without one or more limbs. Their goal is to give hope to these children and share the message that ‘life without limbs is limitless.’”
A year ago, the WWAST lost two very close games to the two local squads. Team Redstone defeated WWAST 19-15 while the Protectors edged the visiting WWAST 15-14.
The WWAST is comprised of competitive and athletic veterans and active duty soldiers who have lost limbs. Those participating have a variety of amputations and travel the country playing abled-bodied teams in competitive, but entertaining celebrity and exhibition games bringing their special brand of softball, courage and inspiration to the forefront.
Team Redstone is made up of military personnel who work on or directly with Redstone Arsenal. The Protectors will feature local members of the Huntsville area fire and police departments. Both squads are competitive and understand their upcoming opponent is most likely even more competitive than they ever thought they could be.
Since its inception, over 85-percent of donations to WWAST have supported programs helping Wounded Warrior Amputees, amputee children and medical research. Those pieces of rehabilitation equipment to military health facilities enhances the health of all amputees. The WWAST represents some of the nation’s bravest and most determined heroes, soldiers and veterans. They now carry a different armor of prosthetic legs and arms, along with extreme perseverance and attitude. Together they make up a squad who are second to none.
“Please come out, support our soldiers, and enjoy a competitive game of softball,” added Fontanez.
