Ghoulish fun awaits at library Halloween party

MADISON – Ghoulish fun and terrorizing treats await at the Halloween Storytime and Puppet Show at Madison Public Library.

“Join us for silly monsters and spooky stories, and don’t forget to wear your Halloween costumes!” youth services librarian Lisa Blackmon said. “Trick or treating will immediately follow storytime.”

The Halloween party on Oct. 26 will start at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free for the event.

Along with Blackmon, youth services librarian Maggie Allen and assistant librarian Teresa Allison are working together to put on the show and provide the entertainment. Friends of the Madison Library will coordinate trick-or-treating shenanigans.

“We expect to have teen volunteers on hand to help at the event,” Blackmon said. “We are currently working collaboratively with Bob Jones High School Construction Academy on a project, which will introduce an exciting type of storytelling. We’re hoping to have it ready to debut for the party.”

“This story would be more appropriate for the older kids, as it features a story that is a bit scarier,” Blackmon said.

A major component of the Halloween Storytime and Puppet Show will be the library’s puppet show based on the new children’s book, “I Want to Be in a Scary Story” by Sean Taylor. The show will feature an interactive narrator and a little monster.

“We will also have a song or two in the program,” Blackmon said.

The librarians look forward to seeing the children’s choices in costumes. “We always have a big mix of costumes for the little ones, but I imagine we will get plenty of tough superheroes (perhaps some Wonder Women) and twirling princesses,” she said. “I especially love to see anything creative or inspired by literature.”

Stories that librarians will read include “Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything” by Linda Williams and “Go Away Big Green Monster” by Ed Emberley. The youngsters can expect to see some monsters that are “scary and not-so-scary ones, big and small … it’ll be a surprise,” Blackmon said.

Madison Public Library’s address is 130 Plaza Blvd. For more information, call 256-461-0046 or visit Facebook/Madison Public Library.
