Students say ‘Thank you’ to veterans

MADISON – Students on Madison City Schools’ campuses showed their appreciation to military personnel in the week leading up to Veterans Day on Nov. 11.

“Patriotic themes were evident throughout the week, such as flag displays, lessons on the flag and branches of the military,” MCS Public Relations Manager John Peck said. ‘Walls of honor’ displayed photos and descriptions of veterans’ relatives.

A summary follows for the veterans’ programs that Madison schools scheduled:

* West Madison Elementary School — Held Veterans Honors Day assembly in the gym on Nov. 6.

* Heritage Elementary School — Grades 3-6 listened to female soldiers as featured speakers during the Veterans Day Assembly on Nov. 7. Also, Heritage completed a candy drive, “Treats for Troops,” with collections gathered throughout the week for mailing to deployed soldiers.

* Horizon Elementary School — “Boots and Breakfast” on Nov. 8 welcomed veterans in for a breakfast of Chick-fil-A sandwiches and other treats. Students wore red, white and blue clothing to show their patriotism.

* Liberty Middle School — Students gathered in the Liberty gym for two programs that honored military personnel.

* Discovery Middle School — Discovery students and teachers invited veterans to join their Veterans Honor Assembly. After enjoying a breakfast, veterans joined the student body in the gym assembly with special speakers. The program included performances by Discovery Panther Band and Chorus. An Honor Guard presented the colors.

* Columbia Elementary School — Students will reveal their Veterans Honor Wall with photographs of combat camps and dress-uniform events on Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. The Columbia Fifth-Grade Choir will sing.

“Madison City Schools has a strong connection with military families and tries to support them through initiatives, such as the Student to Student or S2S mentoring program, which helps new and transferring students adjust,” Peck said.

Approximately 25 percent of MCS students is connected to the military.
