Gibson attends Professional Golfer’s Career College

MADISON – During high school, Tyler Gibson played soccer, baseball, karate and basketball, but golf now is his total focus.

His Aunt Tina gave 18-month-old Tyler a set of plastic clubs, to which he immediately gravitated. His parents took three-year-old Tyler to Madison Golf Center, and he attracted a crowd as he hit the ball 75 yards.

Five-year-old Tyler played his first golf game with his parents at Monrovia Golf Course. He qualified for Bob Jones High School Golf Team as a sophomore and played until graduation in 2017. Currently, he is enrolled at Professional Golfer’s Career College in Bluffton, S.C.

Tyler has participated in Hurricane Golf and Alabama Junior Golf Organization tournaments. Recently, he completed leader training for “1st Tee” and volunteers for Hurricane Golf tourneys near Hilton Head.

At Asbury United Methodist Church, Tyler sang from the three-year-old choir through CHRIST Choir. He attended all choir tours for Voices of Christ for middle schoolers and CHRIST Choir. He assisted in numerous mission projects with Fathom, Asbury’s youth group.

Tyler’s brother, Ashley Schultz, served six years in the U.S. Army, including the Iraq War, and completed college. Brother Wesley Schultz served four years in the U.S. Air Force and earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Tennessee.

Their parents are Stuart and Liz Gibson, both software engineers for SAIC on Army contracts at Redstone Arsenal. The Gibsons are raising Tyler’s first cousin, Caitlyn Neumayr, a seventh-grader at Discovery Middle School.

The Gibsons moved to Madison from Huntsville in 1997.

Q: What is your favorite place to eat in Madison?

A: “Sonic on U.S. 72 to meet friends there and hang out.”

Q: What’s your favorite food?

A: Pizza.

Q: What are your favorite sports teams?

A: Auburn University football.

Q: What’s your favorite sports memory?

A: As a senior, Tyler was playing in a Bob Jones golf tournament at Silver Lakes Golf Course in Gadsden. On the round’s 15th hole, Tyler sank a 50-foot putt downhill. “The crowd cheered at the 16th hole,” mother Liz Gibson said. “They knew something special had just happened.”

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

A: Watch movies, hang out with friends, swim, paddleboard, kayak, go out to eat and go to the beach (Fort Walton Beach, Fla. and Hilton Head Island, S.C.).
