Council can tour Three Springs

MADISON – At Madison City Council’s Jan. 8 meeting, District 1 Councilwoman Maura Wroblewski invited council and Mayor Paul Finley to attend a tour of Three Springs residential treatment facility on Jan. 16 at 10 a.m. The facility’s tour will include inspection of security measures.

Finley presented annual appropriations to four local civic and health organizations. Mike Keenan discussed the work of Madison Beautification and Tree Board and received the board’s annual appropriation of $10,000.

Jeremy Blair, CEO of Wellstone Inc., explained coverage statistics for treating mental health patients, which included appropriately 800 people from Madison last year. Blair accepted $25,000 from the city.

Sharon Willis, Executive Director of the Enrichment Center, discussed therapist outreach in helping Madison students free of charge and accepted $5,000 from Finley. Tina Clark, President of Madison Arts Council, discussed public events and exhibits that the group sponsors; MAC received its annual funding of $10,000.

Tina Clark also announced winning artists in Christmas Card Lane: Stephanie Thompson, “Overall Winner,” “Merry and Bright”; Emily Barkley, first place, “Alabama Cotton Christmas”; Katelyn Craft, second place, “Gingerbread House Christmas”; Miranda Hite, third place, “Superhero Christmas”; and Discovery Middle School Art Club, honorable mention, “Let it Snow.”

In public comments, Karen Denzine, who will be moving, thanked council for her time of service with Industrial Development Board.

Resident Stephen Mosey claimed that 12 false police reports have been filed against a Madison citizen.

In payment of regular and periodic bills, council approved these larger amounts:

* Populous Group LLC — Study and schematic design of multi-use venue, $57,181.07.

* Holzheimer Bolek & Meehan — Architectural and engineering services for Madison Public Library, $17,074.41.

* Pearce Construction Company — Construction costs for Madison Public Library, $178,244.86.

In other council reports, District 2 Councilman Steve Smith said six athletes from Madison played in the national championship football game between the universities of Alabama and Georgia.

District 5 Councilman and President Tommy Overcash received approval for a job description for “Director of Development Service.”

In department reports, planning director Mary Beth Broeren will amend the Downtown Redevelopment Incentive or DRI overlay district in conjunction with apartment development in downtown. Council also approved a resolution for a development agreement between the city and Nest Holdings LLC at Lanier Road and Madison Boulevard.

City Attorney Megan Zingarelli presented first reading of an amendment to residential fees for monthly trash collection. Zingarelli also received approval for an agreement that Finley will complete with Madison County Sheriff’s Office and Madison County Commission for housing of city jail inmates.

Finley designated January as National Mentoring Month.
