City starts street sweeping

MADISON – On Jan. 8, the City of Madison started street sweeping on all curb and gutter streets in the city.

Weather permitting, workers will complete the street sweeping by mid-February. The city asks that residents refrain from parking on or placing any items in the streets between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Residents should place yard debris, trash receptacles and recycle bins behind the curb for weekly pickup. This service is a one-time sweeping, and the street sweeper will drive around any blockage within the street and will not return to sweep later.

One objective for the street sweeping program is to improve the quality of storm water runoff by removing contaminants from the street before they can enter the storm system.

City officials remind citizens to keep leaves, grass clippings, trash and fertilizers away from ditches, gutters or storm drains. Do not dump motor oil, chemicals, pet waste, dirty or soapy water or any other contaminant into the storm drainage system.
