Madison City Schools closed on Jan. 12

Everyone,

Madison City Schools will be closed tomorrow, January 12. All Friday night and Saturday activities are also cancelled.

Our staff attended EMA briefings and received updates from a variety of weather sources. Forecasters are confident that it will rain most of the day, combined with a significant drop in temperature below 32 degrees at some time tomorrow. When that occurs, driving will be treacherous.

As I make this decision, I first think about the 5,000-plus kids that ride buses. I can think of nothing more frightening than a bus load of 50 to 75 kids on an icy hill in Madison or Triana. I also think about our 4,000 high school kids and the approximate 2,000 teenage drivers put in the position of driving home without the skills needed to navigate icy roads.

The decision to close a school is a tough one. The weather predictions may prove to be accurate or not, but I am making this decision with all data and the best counsel I have.

I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Email if you need me.

Robby Parker

MCS Superintendent
