Asbury Community Car Show promises dream vehicles

MADISON – Pristine paint jobs, glistening chrome and pride of ownership will be on display at Asbury Community Car Show on April 14.

The fifth annual show at Asbury United Methodist Church, 980 Hughes Road in Madison will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rain date will be April 21.

This event attracts sports cars, exotics, muscle models, classics and antiques, along with trucks and motorcycles. Local car clubs participate, including Vets with Vettes, Mustang Clubs, NACCC and EuroBrit. The show is open to all cars and promoted on huntsvillecarscene.com and car clubs’ message posts.

Bill Gullatt, longtime Asbury leader and Mustang car enthusiast, originated the idea and organized the first show. Initially, the event extended the men’s ministry for fellowship.

“The event was so successful that the church decided to add a free lunch and children’s activities and make it an annual community event,” publicist Scott Millhouse said.

Shane Reece has led the show for the past three years.

“You can get to know your neighbors and see some really cool cars — from old VWs to million-dollar Porsches, national car show winners and antiques to modern high tech. Previously, we had over 140 cars and expect more this year,” Millhouse said.

All show entries are eligible for hourly door prizes, such as free oil changes, detail kits, tools and car-care buckets, that local merchants have donated.

“Dog of the Show” is strictly for fun. “The car must arrive under its own power but needs the most work and attention,” Millhouse said. “It gets the biggest (dog-inspired) trophy, plus $100 towards improvement.”

In 2017, guests enjoyed more than 1,000 free food items. Organizers will serve food until it’s gone, Millhouse said.

Attendees will vote to select trophy winners in 11 classes: first-, second- and third-place trophies for 1940 and older, 1941-1960, 1961-1990, 1991 and newer; first and second place for Kid’s Choice, truck and motorcycle; along with longest travel, club entry and overall favorite.

Madison Fire Department will present a fire truck and service vehicles for children to explore. The Kid’s Zone in a separate area will offer inflatable slides.

The car show will be staged in Asbury’s north parking lot. Spectator parking will be open in the west and south lots.

Proceeds will support Asbury Free Oil Change, car maintenance ministry and mission work for refugees in Nashville.

Pre-registration costs $20, which includes a goodie bag, T-shirt, Chick-fil-A sandwich and promotions. On-site registration will cost $25.

For more information, call 256-837-0365, email asburycarshow@gmail.com or visit asburycarshow.com or Facebook/Asbury Community Car Show.
