Jets Win James Clemens Invitational Track Meet

MADISON- The James Clemens track program continues to run through its competition in the 2018 outdoor track season. The Jets won both the boys and girls divisions of the James Clemens Invitational Track Meet held at the school last weekend.

The final team scores had the Lady Jets in first place with 196 points. Sparkman was second, 92, Grissom was third, 91, and Bob Jones was fifth, 71.5. In the boys, James Clemens was No. 1 with 96 points followed by Grissom, 88.5. Bob Jones was fifth, 62, and Sparkman sixth, 61.5. The James Clemens girls are undefeated on the 2018 season.

“In 30 meets we have hosted here at James Clemens in six years, we have won 27 of them,” said Drew Bell head coach of James Clemens. “This season alone our girls have beaten 64 schools and having some recent success in some of the throwing events and hurdles events has been a big plus. That gives us a big push with the remaining top teams across the state.”

The highlights of the meet included the James Clemens girls taking 1-2-3 in the 400 meter, 300 hurdles and long jump. Zuri Falkner set a new Alabama state record in the shot put with a toss of 42-feet, 5.5-inches. Shataeya Ligon took top honors in four events including the 100 hurdles (14.94 seconds), long jump (17-01.75), triple jump (37-04) and was a member of the 4×100 (47.54). Vada Samuels won first place in the 200-meter (25.09), 400-meter (57.50) and was also on the 4×100 relay squad.

Charles Lewis of Sparkman was tops in the boys 200 (21.68) and 400 (48.64) while Senator teammate Lauryn Hall won the girls 100 (12.37).

In all, 23 schools participated with a total of over 1,000 athletes.
