Thursdays come alive at Madison Gazebo Concerts

MADISON – Thursdays during June and July just ramped up for excitement in downtown Madison with the return of Madison Gazebo Concerts.

Madison Arts Council sponsors the annual gathering of audiences that include toddlers, twenty-somethings and retired residents on Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at the gazebo on Front Street.

On June 7, Alex Hendrix will open with her self-described ‘Southern gothic rock.’ She credits her father with instilling a respect for folk classics. “He’d go line by line and explain the context, the history and the subtle genius in the lyrics,” Hendrix said.

Next on June 7’s bill is The Zooks. This rock band emphasizes ‘fun’ in their concerts, which often introduce surprise guests. They play dance music from the 1960s through the 1980s, along with Motown.

On June 14, Huntsville’s own The Beasley Brothers will entertain. Now based in Nashville, the band is hot off a gig at The Roof Broadway in Music City. In 2015, The Beasley Brothers were selected as one of the top bands in North Alabama.

The Purple Ravens hold claim as one of the (if not THE) most popular rock/party bands in Madison. At their June 21 gazebo concert, these longtime rockers will deliver their crowd-pleasing style of classic rhythm & blues, rock and pop.

On June 28, 3Way Handshake is scheduled. Organized in 2014, their music includes country, blues, R&B and classic rock. Band members are Ruth Morphew, keyboard, vocals; Bob Youmans, guitars, bongos; Kim Smith, vocals, djembe; Sylvia Dean, vocals, fiddle; Rusty Morphew, guitars; and Holly Wales, vocals, djembe.

Bordertown will burst on the gazebo stage on July 5. This band bills itself as “the hottest blues-rock band in Huntsville,” according its Facebook page. “We will heat things up.”

Another popular hometown band, JED Eye Band will hit the gazebo on July 12. The band plays cover songs from classic rock to the 1990s — everything from Creedence Clearwater Revival to ZZTop. Members are Todd Blass as lead singer, Lisa Williams, Todd Aure, Steve Brown and Russ Dodge.

Divided by Zero will multiply the summertime fun on July 19. The band’s repertoire is varied with a sampling of music genres, including classic rock to funk to ‘kickin’ blues.’ Don’t hold back your enthusiasm, Divided by Zero loves for the crowd to get up and dance.

On July 26, Calypso Vision will wrap the 2018 gazebo season. Calypso Vision pleases audiences with a relaxed spirit of good old-fashioned rock ‘n roll. Current beachcombers are Greg Thompson, Andrew Tygielski, Sonny Veque, Eddie Black, Chris Radzinski, Tania Yee, Sam Benefield and David Lavalee.
