Cummings accepts slot on Madison Board of Education

MADISON – Travis Cummings accepted his position on Madison Board of Education because he appreciates the work of Madison City Schools.

“Our family has been on the receiving end of the Madison City Schools system,” Cummings said. “Our son Cameron will enter Bob Jones High School this coming year under the leadership of Principal Sylvia Lambert. I wanted to give back to a school system that has given our child a tremendous amount of opportunities and experiences while he was still in the school system.”

Cummings believes MCS is giving their son “the necessary academic tools needed for a successful post-secondary education experience. After serving on various school committees, it was truly an eye-opening experience to hear the ideas of the principals and teaching staff on how best serve our children. The level of passion … was amazing.”

Even when committees adjourned, Cummings heard “sidebar conversations on how to ‘make it even better.'”

“I’m truly excited, honored and humbled … to serve students, staff and parents of MCS as a school board member,” he said. He thanked Madison City Council for honoring him with his appointment.

In his opinion, MCS should “prepare for explosive population growth and establish a plan to prevent overcrowding before it impacts the level of education our children receive.” Because of the rise in school shootings, another priority should be a plan to maintain safety for children and staff. “If MCS has any underlying issues or concerns, inform the parents and citizens so we can band together to address the issue.”

At J. F. Drake State Community and Technical College, Cummings earned certification in HVAC. At Alabama A&M University, he received a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology/education. Also at A&M, Cummings completed a master’s degree in regional and community planning.

Cummings works as Zoning Enforcement Coordinator for the City of Huntsville’s Planning Services Department. “I truly enjoy working. My job allows me to assist people every day — from obtaining a business license and other various requests to building their dream home and other major construction projects,” he said.

His wife Dimika Cummings works as Special Education Supervisor/School Psychometrist for Athens City Schools. They have one son, 14-year-old Cameron, who attended Horizon elementary and Discovery middle schools and will enter Bob Jones.

“We have lived in Madison for almost 20 years,” Travis said. “When my wife and I were married, we wanted to start a family so I researched the best school system in the area. MCS was and still is one of the state’s best school systems.”

They are members of All Nations Worship Assembly with Pastor Adrian Davis. Travis has served on MCS policy and transition committees, Madison Family of the Year committee and has volunteered with various activities and organizations.

“When the workday ends, I truly enjoy spending time with my family and finding volunteer opportunities that we do as a family or father-and-son opportunities,” Travis said.
