Wounded Warrior Softball To Play Local Teams September 8th
MADISON- The traveling Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team will make a stop in Madison on Saturday, Sept. 8 for a triple-header at Madison Academy School located on Slaughter Road. Games will be held at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
Made up of veterans and active-duty military personnel who have sustained injuries that led to amputation, these true American heroes inspire and educate others while enhancing the health and welfare of Wounded Warrior amputees. The organization was founded in 2010 and is a standalone 501 C-3 public charity and gives Wounded Warrior athletes the opportunity to compete and serve our country well beyond the battlefield in which many of these heroes were dealt their misfortune.
The team includes several who have been with the team since its birth and have a variety of amputations, including some of those still in the military. The team travels the country playing able-bodied teams in competitive and exhibition softball games.
Saturday’s triple-header will include the first game versus a team from Redstone Arsenal. The second game will be against City of Madison employees while the third contest will feature a team comprised of adults representing Madison Academy.
Jennie Finch, former Olympian and professional softball player said of the Wounded Warriors, “The team is truly made up of amazing heroes. It was such an honor to have hosted them and have the team play in my hometown.”
The Wounded Warrior provide a special day for everyone and basically includes a day filled with softball, courage and inspiration. Those wishing to attend to see the special players within a special event the admission is free.
Mike Bryce, spokesperson for the presenting organization of the Association of the United States Army, said, “We’d love for everyone to come out and support this great event to see these individuals who have given so much and continue to do so. With free admission, we expect a large crowd to come see what these individuals love to do.”
Food trucks, including an ice cream shop, will be on site for food and refreshments and those attending are encouraged to bring their own chairs as there is a limited amount of bleacher seating at the baseball complex at Madison Academy.
“We have it set up if there is inclement weather that day we’ll have the team have a meet and greet inside the auditorium at the school,” added Bryce.
