Bob Jones volleyball team goes undefeated in area play

MADISON- Bob Jones wrapped up area play with a straight set win over James Clemens on Sept. 25. The Patriots had previously swept Austin and Florence is straight sets.

Bob Jones will now host the area tournament on Oct. 22 and 23.

“We did win 3-0 in all our area matches but the competition is good,” Bob Jones head volleyball coach April Marsh said.  “Florence is good, James Clemens played us tough, and Austin has some good athletes. We will play Austin first. Florence will play James Clemens and they are both good teams.”

Bob Jones gets scoring primarily from Emma Jarrett, Juanita Monterio-Pai, and Kiara Hill. All three play the entire game but there is depth on the team. Joy Robinson and Lauren Lyons bring energy off the bench.

LeighAnna Tralongo is a setter but also one of the team’s best servers. Adeline Barnes plays front line and scores on blocks.

Emma Jarrett went over 1,000 kills for her career against Grissom earlier this season. Monterio-Pai is one of the top players in the state and has started since her freshman year. She closed out the first game against James Clemens with a kill.

“A lot of our hitters are able to put the ball away and that makes it tough for the other team. We have depth at a lot of positions and it makes the kids work hard because somebody is right behind them wanting that position. The season is long so we give them days off before tough tournaments and as we get to the end of the season we want them healthy and fresh going into area,” Marsh said.

Now up to No. 4 in Class 7A the Patriots next goal will be to get back to Birmingham and like last year, play for a state championship. They came up just short against McGill-Toolen.

James Clemens has been ranked in the top 10 this season.

Against Bob Jones the Jets got scoring from front line players Marissa Lacey, Sarah Cook, Catherine Klop, and Jamie Benesh. All total James Clemens has seven seniors. Sydney Bates has the tough job of playing defense.

Miranda Hunt, a junior lefthander, plays setter and defense. Anna Jupin is a freshman getting a lot of playing time on the front line with the varsity.
