Scholars Bowl team at Monrovia Middle ranks nationally

MONROVIA – The Scholars Bowl Team at Monrovia Middle School claimed a high ranking in the 2018 Middle School National Championship Tournament.

“We are the first middle school in the state of Alabama to win a trophy at the National Academic Quiz Tournaments or NAQT National Finals ever,” Scholars’ Bowl Coach Gene Cox said.

Members of Monrovia’s A Team for Scholars Bowl were Captain Caleb Ethridge, Andrew Goetz, Rebecca Jensen and Eshan Pokhrel. Competing in the B Team were Isabelle Berube, Emily Centamore, Hunter Mason, Gracie Reaves and David Rodebaugh.

“Also, all of our A team students won a trophy award. The school has received a nice team trophy for being in the top 32 teams in the nation,” Cox said. After final rounds, Monrovia placed in the 17th slot among those top-ranking teams.

Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Rosemont, Ill. in the Chicago area hosted the tournament.

Monrovia A Scholars Bowl Team won matches against T. H. Rogers of Houston, Texas and Keith Country Day of Rockford, Ill. in the NAQT play for the post-preliminary playoff brackets.

“We could not be more proud of our students and how they represented Monrovia Middle School and our community at this competition in Chicago,” Cox said. “Congratulations go to out to each of our students on the A and the B teams for their performance at the tournament.”

About 200 schools entered the national competition.
