Destinee “Miracle” McGhee Reaches 2,000-Point Plateau At Madison Academy
MADISON- Destinee McGhee is now among a group, though a small group, of players who have made their way to the 2,000 points plateau among the Madison Academy Mustangs basketball program. The 6-foot-2 junior became the first girl and just the second player joining Joshua Langford as the only players to post the points scored and be placed among the elite mesa in school history.
The Arkansas commit was honored for her achievement during a special ceremony held prior to a recent Lady Mustangs game.
“I find it to be very humbling to be there with a great player like Joshua and it’s great to know I hit a milestone like this for a super program here at Madison Academy,” said McGhee. “A lot of coaches have sacrificed their time for me through the years and have upgraded my game to make me a more complete player. I still think I have more work to do as I’m never satisfied with my play.”
McGhee has totaled over 2,000 points, along with over 1,000 rebounds, and over 120 blocked shots while averaging 60-percent from both the floor and foul line in her games. She spent her sophomore season at James Clemens after transferring from Madison Academy. With James Clemens hiring a new coach, McGhee chose to return to Madison Academy where she also played as a freshman. She is currently ranked the No. 60 player in the country and seventh at her position.
As a freshman at Madison Academy, she was among the players to lead the program to the 2017 Class 4A State Championship where she was named to the All-Tournament and All-State teams.
Known as “The Rock” among the many teams she has played for, McGhee is no stranger to success on the hardwood. Playing for the Sparks in the Basketball Association of Madison recreational leagues in 2014, she was one of players to lead her team to a perfect 15-0 record and division tournament championship where she scored 20 of her team’s 51 points in the tournament title game.
“I have confidence in our team this season and excited for the upcoming playoffs as we want to prove we can handle moving up in classifications this season to 5A,” said McGhee of the Lady Mustangs efforts to defend the state title the squad won last year in Class 4A.
McGhee has had a bevy of top-notch women’s college basketball programs pursue the talented player. Those knocking on her skills’ door include Duke, North Carolina, Florida, Miss State, Alabama and Auburn. After consideration from numerous schools, she chose the Arkansas Razorbacks in a verbal commitment last November.
“I fell in love with the environment at Arkansas and everyone I met seemed to be very close and had great relationships with one another,” said McGhee.
Her incredible journey almost never came to be as her mother had complications during her pregnancy with McGhee. The birth of McGhee to Mabel and Jeffrey McGhee was somewhat of a surprise to the family. So much so, her given name is Destinee Miracle.
