North Super Sectional Wrestling Results

BIRMINGHAM- The Bob Jones Patriots finished second in team scoring at the North Super Sectional Wrestling Tournament and qualified 11 wrestlers for the AHSAA State Tournament scheduled for this weekend in Huntsville at the Von Braun Center. Included in the elite 11 from the Patriots’ program to advance to the State Meet are sets of twin brothers Zaderian and Zaevian Toney and George and Cal Francovitch.

In the championship matches held at the Bill Harris Arena at the CrossPlex in the Magic City, Zaderian Toney (21-0) defeated Ryan Summerlin (49-7) of Vestavia Hills 6-4 in a tie-breaker in the 106-pound division while Zaevian Toney (29-6) notched a victory in the 113-pound division with a pin at the 4:21 mark against Christopher Hays (34-21) of Vestavia Hills. Both are seniors.

Fellow Bob Jones seniors to take first place honors included Gabriel Pittman (30-9) in the 160-pound division with 9-1 major decision over Carson Casteel (32-9) of Florence and George Francovitch (22-1) a 9-6 winner over Mt. Brook’s Jack Higgins (41-8) in the 182 division.

Those who finished runner-up in the finals were Cal Francovitch (26-9) of Bob Jones who lost to Peter Dazzio (45-3) of Vestavia Hills by technical fall in 170, Jordan Whalen (34-6) of Bob Jones fell in an 8-6 decision to Stone Barden (33-1) of Hewitt-Trussville in 145, Cordell Ellison (35-10) of Sparkman falling in a tough 2-1 decision to Gadsden City’s Samuel Jaggers (43-1) in 126 and Jim Wilson (42-9) of Bob Jones who was pinned at the 1:43 mark by Tyler Ivey (44-0) of Grissom in 120.

In team scoring, Vestavia Hills was tops with a score of 241, Bob Jones second at 212, Sparkman No. 8 at 50 points and James Clemens ninth with 46 points.

The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the State tournament. In addition to the finals participants, those also qualifying to advance were Abe Alrefai, Bob Jones, and Sebastian Davis of James Clemens (138), Raequan McCray, Bob Jones (152), Nick Mothersele, Bob Jones, (195), Ryan Keepers, James Clemens, and Jordan Aycock, Bob Jones, (220) and Matt Burrow, James Clemens, (285).

In all, Bob Jones had 11 wrestlers who qualified for the State Meet while James Clemens had three and Sparkman with one.
