Madison students earn Scholastic art, writing awards

MADISON – Madison students were quite popular with judges for the 2019 Scholastic Alliance for Young Artists and Writers.

James Clemens took several titles in this year’s submissions to the Southeast Region At-Large division for Scholastic Young Artists and Writers Awards. Alabama participates in the Southeast Region At-Large, which includes public and private schools from Washington D.C. to Texas. Approximately 2,000 students compete in this region.

The organization has awarded students for outstanding writing and art since 1923. The alliance recognizes, promotes and provides scholarship opportunities to exceptional U.S. students and international schools in grades 7-12.

For any student work with a Gold Key Award, officials automatically forward the entry for judging at the national level. Individual winners for National Gold Key are recognized at Carnegie Hall in June. The Empire State Building will illuminate in gold light to honor the winners.

At James Clemens, Sylvia Cortes received gold and silver keys for painting and honorable mention for drawing. For painting, Madeline Drucker earned a silver key and honorable mention.

Hannah Einhorn collected gold and silver for art portfolio design, painting and three drawings and honorable mention for two drawings. Ange Long’s two drawings earned gold, while Lauren Norris took silver for two submissions. Maddie Scholtterer received honorable mention for comic art.
