Madison Music Camp to offer elective classes

MADISON – Band and choral students in middle school can improve their skills and be ready for the upcoming performance season this fall by attending Madison Music Camp.

Area professionals will lead ensemble rehearsals and conduct sessions during the week. James Clemens High School will host the camp on June 10-14 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Madison Music Camp has become a staple for middle school band students in our area,” Keith Anderson, James Clemens Director of Bands, said. “Each year, students from Madison and surrounding communities enjoy a week of rehearsals, electives and a whole lot of fun learning music from a great lineup of music professionals.”

Ensemble conductors for 2019 will be Clay Sloan, Austin High School, and Nancy Frith, Priceville High School. Clinician staff will include Jenney Merritt, Vikki Truesdail, Stephanie Wallace, Robin Cotton, Kayla Sims, Marsha Asquith, Joshua King and Kevin Smart. More clinicians will be added.

Students who will enter grades 6-9 in the next school year are eligible for the camp. Separate registration forms are available for advanced camp with students who have played one year or more and for beginner camp with students who want to learn to play an instrument, along with chorus students.

To access the forms, visit jcjetsband.com, scroll down to the “Special Event” section that lists the music camp. Then, click either “Download Advanced Camp Form” or “Download Beginning Camp Form.”

Students in the beginning camp will have master classes.

For the advanced camp, students can choose electives, which in morning sessions include jazz band, marching band basics, conducting, beginning piano and color guard basics. Electives for afternoon sessions include conducting, beginning piano, marching band basics, color guard basics, secondary instruments (campers should bring their own instruments), bucket drumming and music theory.

In addition, campers will select an alternate elective in case their first-choice session is full.

Registration deadline is May 31. Campers who register by this date will receive a camp T-shirt.

Camp fee is $200, which includes lunch each day. Campers can pay at https://madisoncityal.csiepay.com, by cash or check at James Clemens or mail payment to James Clemens High School, in care of Keith Anderson, 11306 County Line Road, Madison AL 35756.

For more information, email kanderson@madisoncity.k12.al.us or visit jcjetsband.com and click the link for the beginner or advanced camp.
