Residents have until June 28 to opt-in new curbside recycling program
MADISON COUNTY – Madison residents, along with those in Madison County and Huntsville may choose opt-in to a new recycling problem that begins August. 1
The Solid Waste Disposal Authority of the City of Huntsville (SWDA) announced their new and improved curbside recycling collection program, Recycling Alliance of North Alabama (RANA), Friday during a press conference.
RANA is a free, opt-in program that will include monthly curbside recycling cart pick up. SWDA officials said the new automated program will be more efficient and user-friendly. The carts will replace the current 18-gallon bins with larger 95-gallon rolling carts with lids.
The current bin service is scheduled to end Wednesday, July 31. Between now and then, residents should still continue to place their bins on the curb for pickup.
SWDA urges all eligible residents to sign up for the new RANA program by June 28 in order to receive a new cart and continue their free recycling service. If Madison residents currently have their garbage picked up by Madison County, they are eligible for the new program. The first round of cart deliveries will begin in July and residents will be notified at that time of their pick up date.
“We designed RANA to be an ever-evolving program to fit the recycling needs of our residents and continue to make the City of Huntsville, City of Madison and Madison County sustainable places to live,” said John R. “Doc” Holladay, Executive Director of SWDA. “Since residents must register for the new program, it is very important that all residents sign up either through our website or by calling in. We will work diligently to eliminate any potential interruptions in the program.”
Items accepted will include #1 and #2 plastic bottles (where the neck is smaller than the bottom), aluminum, steel and bi-metal cans, mixed paper and cardboard. Used motor oil and batteries will no longer be accepted in the curbside program. Those items can be taken to the new Household Hazardous Waste facility at 1055 A Cleaner Way, Huntsville. They are open Monday – Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
In order to participate in the program and get a rolling recycling cart, residents must sign up at www.recycling-alliance.com or call (256) 801-CART (2278).
