Fantasy Playhouse holds casting call for ‘Poarch Creek Courage’

HUNTSVILLE – Calling professional, adult actors! A casting call by Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater & Academy will place non-union actors for the In-School Touring Program of “Poarch Creek Courage.”

To fill the paid roles, Fantasy Playhouse’s auditions on July 27 and 28 at 2 p.m. will be held at Fantasy Arts Center, 3312 Long Ave. SW in Huntsville. Mariah Beachboard wrote this new play. Karen Baker is director.

Casting will include three women and two men. Each actor will play a variety of characters.

Actors should prepare and memorize a one-minute monologue or children’s poem, along with being prepared to move and work with others in improvisation. Bring a resume and current headshot to auditions.

Actors must be available during daytime for school performances. Indigenous actors and actors of color will receive special consideration in casting.

Rehearsals will start in August with performances scheduled in September 2019 through May 2020. Booking contracts may require the company to take additional state travel.

Fantasy Playhouse commissioned “Poarch Creek Courage” with development support from Alabama State Council on the Arts. The play tells the history of Alabama’s Poarch Band of Creek Indians, with a target audience of elementary students in grades 3-5.

The story’s protagonist, Leigh Ann, faces bullies at school. Her discontent sparks a supernatural visit by a Creek ancestor from the 1700s. During the course of four tales, this matriarch reveals wisdom and courage.

After reliving tales of Poarch Creek history, Leigh Anne courageously faces her own school bullies. Outcast, oppressed and forgotten, the most courageous Alabamian community stands against every challenge to become an inspiring success story, according to a Fantasy Playhouse spokesperson.
