Learn, imagine at Madison Public Library sessions

MADISON – The ‘dog days of summer’ may seem only useful for afternoon naps, but activities at Madison Public Library during early August can jolt a person’s interest and creativity.

An open shop for the Madison Makerspace in The Studio will be available from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 5 and again on Aug. 8 from 2 to 5 p.m. “August is back-to-school month, so bring your supplies and customize your school gear,” Madison Branch Manager Sarah Sledge said.

“You can make a first-day shirt or sign, or design some cool locker decorations,” Sledge said.

Also on Aug. 5, the “Adulting 101 – Interviewing Skills” meeting will run from 6 to 7 p.m. in auditorium 2. Participants will hear the correct methods to ace a job interview. The target audience will be teenagers and adults.

Pam Honeycutt, Executive Director of Madison Chamber of Commerce, will lead this lecture and share five steps that lead to interview success.

“Meditation at Madison” will meet on Aug. 7 from 11 to 11:30 a.m. in auditorium 2. Participants will spend 30 minutes with guided mediation to calm the mind. Chairs are provided, but attendees can bring mats, blankets and pillows.

The Summer Movie Series will continue on Aug. 9 with “Avengers: Infinity War” starting at 8 p.m. These nights for family movie entertainment are staged on the library patio. The remaining movies on the schedule are “Crazy Rich Asians” on Aug. 16 and “Cinderella” on Aug. 23.

“Movies start at sunset. We will provide popcorn. Don’t forget your picnic blanket or chair,” Sledge said.

On Aug. 10, “Passport: Malaysia” will start at 1 p.m. This session will introduce and explain lifestyle customs for this region of the world.

“Learn a new culture at the library,” Sledge said. “Belinda Ong will give a presentation on what it’s like to travel to Malaysia. Other activities will also be available.”

A cake decorating class on Aug. 12 from 6 to 7 p.m. in auditorium 2 will teach participants the steps to make a scalloped, eight-inch cake with icing. The target audience is adults.

The cake decorating session has a $10 supply fee, due at required registration. Participants can register at the circulation desk.

Geared for adults, “American Mah Jongg” players meet on Mondays and Fridays from noon to 3 p.m. New and experienced players are welcome. For more information, contact Adult Services Librarian Teresa Allison by calling 256-461-0046 or email tallison@hmcpl.org.

Madison Public Library’s address is 142 Plaza Blvd. Madison branch hours are Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday – Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.
