Madison Academy Product Jordan Matthews Prepares For NFL Season With San Francisco 49ers
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF.- Former college All-American at Vanderbilt and star for the Madison Academy High Mustangs Jordan Matthews is entering his sixth season in the National Football League and is preparing for the 2019 campaign with the San Francisco 49ers.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound wide receiver signed as a free agent for a one-year deal with the 49ers in March. The 26-year old Matthews played in 14 games with the Philadelphia Eagles a season ago with 20 catches, 300 yards and two touchdowns. He rejoined the Eagles last year after one year with the Buffalo Bills in 2017 as he played three seasons (2014-2016) with the Eagles after coming out of college at Vanderbilt.
With the SEC Commodores, Matthews finished his four years of college play as the SEC’s all-time leader in receptions (262) and receiving yards (3,759) and had a school-record 24 TDs as a receiver. He was originally drafted by the Eagles in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
He did sign as a free agent with the New England Patriots in 2018, but was released from the team prior to the season schedule getting underway.
For his career, Matthews has 270 catches for 3,255 yards and 22 touchdowns with most of those stats coming in his first three seasons with Philadelphia. In those three glorious seasons, he became one of just five players in NFL history to average 65-plus receptions and 800-plus receiving yards in each of his first three seasons.
Matthews is among a crowded list of receivers and is fighting for a spot on the team roster. Currently, there are 11 receivers on the depth chart/roster. So far in pre-season practices, Matthews has performed well as his expert talents and NFL experience looks to pay off in the end. The 49ers coaching staff are looking to Matthews to make a strong surge at gaining one of the roster spots when final cuts are made.
Matthews’ wife, Cheyna, is currently in her fourth season of professional soccer for the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League.
