JCTheatre Summer Spotlight Camp set for May 26-29

MADISON – Theatre students can learn more about stage performance and skills, both on stage and behind the curtain, at an upcoming camp at James Clemens High School.

The JCTheatre Summer Spotlight Camp will be offered on May 26-29 on the James Clemens campus. Drama teachers Amy Patel and Clint Merritt will guide the fifth annual camp. Camp hours will be 9 a.m. to noon.

“The Summer Spotlight Camp is a fun, creative opportunity to learn acting, musical or technical skills and put on a show,” Patel said previously about the sessions. Students in grades 2-9 in the 2019-2020 school year are eligible to enroll.

When completing camp applications, prospective campers can choose first and second preferences for their training concentration:

* Acting — A small group of students will rehearse lines and blocking and then perform a short scene of a play.

* Musical theatre — In a medium-sized group of 15 or more students, the group will rehearse singing and dancing and possibly perform a song from a Broadway musical.

* Technical theatre — In a small group, campers will learn about the tools and procedures for set construction; design and build sets; work with lighting and sound; experiment with hair and makeup styles for the stage; create props; and run the technical elements of the show.

“Everyone will perform, onstage or backstage, in our Spotlight Showcase for family and friends at noon on Friday, May 29 to feature what they have learned,” Merritt said. “The showcase will last about one hour followed by a pizza party in the lobby.”

Campers will receive a camp T-shirt and enjoy a snack each day.

Camp fee is $75 per student. Registration deadline is May 1. Campers must pay by this date to confirm receiving a camp T-shirt.
